(HARTFORD, CT) - Yesterday, Luke Bronin, the endorsed Democratic candidate for mayor, announced that after months of inaction from Mayor Segarra, he and other people from the community would pull together their own meeting to discuss the spike in gun violence.
When asked if he would attend, the Mayor’s campaign made it clear that he would not because he did not receive a personal invitation.
Yesterday’s announcement makes it explicitly clear that: “All residents who are concerned about [the spike in gun violence] are encouraged to attend.”
Today, Luke Bronin released the following statement:
“When we announced this meeting, we made it clear that all residents who are concerned about the spike in gun violence are encouraged to attend. Why the Mayor doesn’t think he is a part of that open invitation is a question only he can answer.
“I want to commend Joel Cruz for announcing that he will attend the event. This conversation is too important to let politics get in the way.
“This is a critical moment, one where we need to pull our city together and work for one common purpose – to stop the violence.
“Yet all we’ve heard from the Mayor is a bunch of promises with no follow through.
“Why is he going around the city touting the Summer Youth Employment Program when he proposed cutting the program in his budget?
“Why did it take him more than two months to reach out to the state for assistance?
“Why hasn’t he convened a public meeting on his own after repeatedly pledging to do so over the last three months?
“We need a mayor who’s going to take on the tough issues and hold himself accountable. By any measure, Mayor Segarra is not willing to do either of these things.”
Information on the meeting is as follows:
