Had fun interviewing with Pamela Wright on “Make it Happen.” At around minute 9:30, Pamela asked me, “What made you get into politics?” As I told her, the first thing that really got me passionate about policy was that during college, I taught GED courses and was a writing tutor in the New Haven Correctional Center. It was then I became really convinced that our criminal justice system, and in particular our drug sentencing laws, were misguided. Putting people in jail doesn’t necessarily make communities safer or families stronger, and isn’t necessarily a great way to get individuals who make mistakes back on track.
That’s why working as the chief legal counsel in the Governor’s office on Second Chance Society reform of our criminal justice system and on diversifying the judicial bench was so meaningful to me. Now, as a candidate, I’ve prioritized criminal justice reform and public safety. Check out my public safety plan here. And check out the whole interview below!
